Bath - Despite being a major tourist area, Bath manages to retain a quiet air of gentility. Bath grew up around the supposedly devine and healing waters of its hot springs. The Romans called it Aqua Sulis, the waters of the local god Sulis, with powers and attributes similar powers to the Roman god Minerva. Around this hot spring the Romans built their baths and the pleasure services that a Roman soldier would enjoy when ‘on leave’.
In the 18th century the architect John Wood started to re-furbish and reshape the town of Bath into a “Roman” city with square, crescent and circus.
Explore Bath and judge for yourself how well he, and his son, suceeded. If you approach from the M4 junction 18 and head down the A46 watch out for the fine view off to the right of Bath, down in the valley. |
