Brittany The original ‘little Britain’. The Bretons are of Celtic origin and have much in common with the Cornish, Welsh and Scots. In 1532 it became part of France but, to this day retains a very strong regional identity. The coastline is very rugged along much of Brittany’s northern shores with areas of sandy beaches. South of Benodet it eases up a little giving way to long stretches of sandy beach with rocky outcrops just to catch the unwary matelot. The ‘hinterland’ is scattered with lovely villages and towns. Megalithic monuments (espec. at Carnac) give you a glimpse of the pre-history whilst wonderful churches and religious monuments may be found all over the area. Calvarys – monuments depicting The Passion and Crucifixion of Christ - dot the region. Many were built to ward of the 16th cent. plague or as a thanksgiving for being spared. Or if you just want to be… The seafood in this region would be hard to beat and the light is just magical for photos or painting or just… looking. |
