York became a Unitary Authority in 1996, making it its own county. It used to be the county town of Yorkshire but now it is surrounded by the county it once controlled. Its a funny old world but York has been around a long time, York celebrates its 2000 birthday in 2071 and enjoyed visits from the Romans, the Vikings who stayed for quite a while. More recently hordes of Japanese and US citizens and most other world travelling tourists have passed through, pausing to grab a few quick photos of York Minster that was started in 1220 and declared ‘complete’ in 1472, clearly not a Quick Build project. Joking aside York really does have 2000‘ish years of history and the visitor would be well rewarded if he/she spent more than a few days exploring the surprisingly small but fascinating area within the city walls. |
